In 1972, in it’s first race, Paul Smart captured a surprise victory at the Imola 200 against the well established factory racing teams of MV Agusta, Norton and Honda. The victory at Imola was beyond anyone's expectation and very important to Ducati. The win helped define Ducati's approach to racing.

Sidecar racing has evolved from traditional motorcycles with a sidecar attached to the modern purpose build racing machines of today. A lot of the technology used on modern sidecars is borrowed from open wheel race cars. Sidecar racing consists of a driver and a sidecar rider, often referred to as a “monkey”, who work together to maintain the balance of the vehicle while it is in motion. The monkey does this by literally throwing their weight around to keep the sidecar stable and ridable.
